Raw milk prices paid to Murang’a’s dairy farmers have stagnated at around Ksh 35 per litre for years, squeezing profitability even as the same milk fetches a much higher price once pasteurized and sold in urban markets like Thika and Nairobi. This study assessed the feasibility of installing a milk pasteurization unit at Kangari United Dairy Cooperative Society’s existing facility, which already has a permanent building, four milk coolers with a combined 16,000-litre capacity, and standby power.
The study found the investment could let the cooperative pasteurize and sell part of its aggregated milk directly into the informal urban market, capturing value currently going to traders and centralized processors, and improving margins for the cooperative’s smallholder members.
