Investing in Market-Oriented Horticultural Producers

A Case Study of Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion (SHEP) in Kenya

Smallholder Horticulture Empowerment and Promotion (SHEP) is an innovative extension approach developed jointly by the Japan Government through Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Cooperatives. The approach has contributed immensely to human capital development in agriculture, particularly that of smallholder horticulture farmers in Kenya. The information is derived from a case study of the three phases of the SHEP approach implemented between 2006 and 2020 in Kenya. The documentation process was commissioned by IFPRI with support from FAO and was undertaken by KeFAAS.
